The breadth repair breaks

Nifty lost 2.4%, but the deeper setback was participation falling to six-week lows.

Last week's rally left us watching whether improving breadth could finally replenish advancing trends. This week removed the improvement before that confirmation arrived. The market remains Neutral — Fading. Against the past six weeks, this is a continuation of trend erosion, with a decisive failure of the recent breadth repair.

The index understates the damage

Nifty remains above its October low, but participation has fallen to six-week lows. Only 9.1% of stocks are above their 20-day average. Long-term breadth is also at a six-week low, with 24.4% above the 200-day average.

Last weekend, I gave the surviving breadth repair room to develop. That was too generous: it proved temporary, rather than the start of broader recovery. The yearly high-low balance has now been negative for 20 sessions. Friday's deficit of 540 was a six-week low, so the weakness extends well beyond a short-term loss of momentum.

Stage 2 now accounts for 25.9% of the market, a six-week low. The week's loss of 37 advancing stocks keeps the central warning from our recent reviews intact: rallies have not rebuilt the trend base.

Over the last five sessions, 12 stocks moved from basing into advancing trends, against 59 moving from advancing into topping. That deficit is narrower than the six-week extreme reached earlier in October, but it is still a deficit. The rolling five-session balance has been negative for 30 sessions.

Delta Corp and One Point One Solutions lead the early-stage setup list, with scores of 8.4 and 8. These are individual screening candidates, not evidence that market conditions have improved. Elsewhere, Godrej Properties and PG Electroplast moved from topping into declining trends during the week. Those deteriorations deserve as much attention as the surviving setups.

IT leadership becomes loss containment

Information Technology led the week by falling 1%. Energy followed with a 1.6% decline. At the weak end, Industrials lost 6.6%, while Utilities fell 6.3%.

IT's monthly gain of 8.2% still separates it from the broader weakness. Yet only 21.5% of its stocks are advancing, down 2.1 percentage points over 20 sessions. The price-participation gap we followed through the daily notes remains open. Outsourced services still has 30% advancing, with no expansion over that period.

Energy retains 51.7% advancing participation, but its 20-session change is now negative by 3.4 points. Last week's positive price performance did not restore that cushion, and this week's decline offers no repair.

The remaining pockets need a stricter reading

Our earlier emphasis on Paper overstated its durability. Paper Products held 36% advancing participation through Thursday, then finished Friday at 32%. Telecom equipment also ends below Monday's participation reading, at 50% advancing. Neither pocket has disappeared, but the resilience story has weakened.

Health Care's relative-strength score of 71.7 should not be mistaken for broad trend health. Its advancing share has fallen 12.7 percentage points over 20 sessions. Financials continues to erode too, with only 18.8% advancing.

Public banks remain an exception within Financials, holding 25% advancing participation and a positive 20-session change. That exception has survived; it has not spread across the sector. For the week ahead, the useful test is whether breadth repair returns alongside a replenishing Stage 2 cohort. A green index alone has already failed that test.
