Nifty 50 fell 1.1% across the five sessions to close at 23,897.7, still below its 200-day average and 9.2% below its 52-week high. The slow structural gauge — the share of stocks above their 200-day average — barely moved, narrowing from 42.9% to 42.4% by Friday, but the fast short-term gauge told the real story: it dropped sharply mid-week, touching 36.5% on Wednesday when net new highs turned negative, before recovering to 43.7% by the close. The Stage-2 advancing cohort shrank by 28 over the week to 839 stocks, now 33.3% of the market, and the transition flow confirmed the direction — 67 stocks exited Stage 2 against only 31 entering it, a net loss of 36. This is a market in retreat at the stock level, whatever the index's near-flat Friday print suggests.

How the week unfolded

Monday opened with some residual firmness — advancers led 1,295 to 1,183 and net new highs came in at 93 — but that was the week's best internal reading. Tuesday saw decliners swamp advancers 1,584 to 922 and net new highs fell to 68. Wednesday and Thursday were worse: decliners led again, net new highs went negative on Wednesday at minus six, and the fast breadth gauge fell to its weekly low of 36.5%. Thursday's advancers recovered to 1,492 but the Stage-2 share kept sliding. Friday's modest bounce — advancers 1,317, decliners 1,169, net new highs back to 72 — looks like stabilisation after a bruising week, not a turn. The trajectory across all five sessions is range-bound and mixed, with no decisive recovery in either breadth gauge or leadership.

Sector picture for the week

Energy was the only sector to close the week in positive territory, up 2.1%. Real Estate slipped 0.4% and Materials 0.6%, while Industrials and Consumer Staples were the week's clear laggards, each down 1.8%. The three-month view remains anchored in Real Estate at plus 18.9%, Consumer Discretionary at plus 12.9% and Health Care at plus 11.9% — those trends are intact but the weekly sector flow is not reinforcing them. Energy and Consumer Staples are where the Stage-2 cohort has been expanding fastest over the past 20 days, alongside Materials, though Materials' weekly price performance was negative. Utilities and Consumer Staples remain the three-month laggards at minus 7.3% and minus 0.4% respectively.

What cleared the screen this week

Eight names crossed the Stage 1-to-2 threshold across the five sessions: Hatsun Agro Product, Suraksha Diagnostic, APL Apollo Tubes, PB Fintech, Sapphire Foods India, Matrimony.Com, Vidhi Specialty Food Ingredients and Dhunseri Ventures. That is a thin entry list set against 67 exits — the screen is surfacing these names into a backdrop where the advancing cohort is contracting, not expanding, and the regime is in transition with a neutral-to-down near-term read. Among the sustained setups, Omaxe Ltd from Real Estate carries the highest setup score at 10, with Bliss GVS Pharma from Health Care and KRN Heat Exchanger and Refrigeration from Industrials both at 9.8. In pullbacks, Materials dominates — Raghav Productivity Enhancers, Manaksia Steels, Shivalik Bimetal Controls and Foseco India all cleared that screen. The names are real; the context they sit in is not constructive, and the exit-to-entry ratio this week is the clearest summary of where the tape stands.
