Nifty's best day, Stage 2's smallest share

The index rose 1.6%, but advancing trends shrank to a 30-session low. IT's rally has a breadth problem.

The Nifty gained 1.6% to 22,721.9, its strongest daily rise in the 30-session window. The advancing cohort went the other way: just 28.4% of stocks are in Stage 2, the lowest share in that same window. This was a price rebound, not a repair of the underlying trend structure. The near-term market read remains neutral-to-down.

Participation improved. Trend damage did not.

Advancers outnumbered decliners by 1,439 to 1,037. About 31% of stocks are above their 20-day average, up from 20.5% at the 8 October low. But only 25.5% are above their 50-day average and 35.7% above their 200-day average. Over the last five sessions, 14 stocks moved from basing into advancing trends while 77 moved from advancing into topping. That deficit of 63 matches the worst reading in the window. The Stage-2 share has lost 2.3 percentage points over five sessions. Meanwhile, 268 stocks made 52-week lows against 83 highs; lows have outnumbered highs for 13 consecutive sessions. The bounce has eased the pressure without reversing the deterioration.

IT's surge is not broad leadership

Information Technology led the sector gains with a 4.6% rise. Yet only 22.4% of its stocks are advancing, and that share has fallen 4.6 percentage points over 20 sessions. The split inside the sector is sharper. IT Services & Consulting rose 5.7%, but just 13.4% of its stocks are in Stage 2, down 7.3 percentage points over 20 sessions. Outsourced services has a different profile: 40% are advancing, with participation up 10 percentage points. A large sector move can conceal very different trend quality beneath it. Today's IT headline is stronger than its advancing breadth.

What the early screen actually shows

Tega Industries Ltd and Jash Engineering Ltd lead the early-stage screen, with setup scores of 8.8 and 8.3 out of 10. Lloyds Engineering Works Ltd follows at 7.8. These are individual Industrials exceptions, not evidence of a sector-wide turn: 25.5% of Industrials stocks are advancing, down 3.3 percentage points over 20 sessions. Across the market, the median setup score is 5 out of 10, tied for the window low. The screen identifies chart candidates; their presence does not confirm that this rebound has become a durable advance.
