The Nifty rose 0.98% to 22,776.1, its strongest daily gain in 30 sessions. Advancers outnumbered decliners by 2.32 to one, also the strongest reading in that window. But the share of stocks in Stage 2 slipped to 30.2%, a 30-session low. The bounce has broad daily participation; it has not rebuilt the advancing cohort. Treat this as repair, not a green light.
A better day inside a damaged market
There were 1,729 advancing stocks against 746 decliners. Participation above the 20-day average improved to 31.5%, from 23.7% yesterday. That is a meaningful lift, but only 29.2% of stocks are above their 50-day average and 36% above their 200-day average. The longer trends remain weak.
The 52-week extremes tell the same story: 136 highs against 261 lows. Lows have outnumbered highs for eight sessions. Over the last five sessions, 22 stocks moved from basing into advancing trends, while 48 moved from advancing into topping. That balance has stayed negative for 28 sessions. Selling pressure eased today; the pipeline of healthy trends still needs work.
Paper is building beneath weak Materials
Paper Products offers a more useful pocket to study than the market-wide bounce. Across its 25 stocks, 40% are in Stage 2, with that share up 20 percentage points over 20 sessions. The industry is up 4.1% over one month and 17.9% over three months.
That contrasts with Materials, which is down 4.3% over one month and has a slightly smaller advancing share than 20 sessions ago. Paper's improvement is not just today's 1.7% rise. Participation and multi-month performance are moving together. It belongs on the research watchlist, without turning the whole sector into a bullish call.
Early screens, not market permission
Keep the early Stage-2 list separate from a judgement on the tape. The market's median setup score is 5.4 out of 10, tied at its 30-session low. Selectivity matters more than the number of names the screener produces.
Manoj Vaibhav Gems N Jewellers Ltd leads the early list with a score of 8.4, followed by Sree Rayalaseema Hi-Strength Hypo Ltd at 7.9 and Carborundum Universal Ltd at 7.8. These are screening candidates for chart review, not evidence that the market has turned. Their individual scores sit well above the median; the shrinking advancing cohort remains the backdrop.
