406 stocks at yearly lows; breadth hits fresh troughs

The October 6 bounce has given way to broad damage. Pharmaceuticals retain a stronger advancing cohort.

The damage is broader than the Nifty's 1.64% fall. There were 406 stocks at 52-week lows against just 43 at highs, leaving a deficit of 363 — the widest negative gap in the 30-session window. Only 282 stocks rose while 2,208 fell. The index closed at 22,231.8, but the more useful headline for swing traders is the collapse in participation, not the index level.

The bounce did not repair the trend

On October 6, 1,729 stocks advanced and the Nifty gained 0.98%. Today, just 20% of stocks are above their 20-day average, 22% above their 50-day and 33% above their 200-day. All three measures are at 30-session lows. Yearly lows have outnumbered highs for ten sessions. The advancing Stage-2 share is also at a window low of 29.45%, down 3.76 percentage points over 20 sessions. Over the latest five sessions, 21 stocks moved from basing into advancing, while 47 moved from advancing into topping. This is deterioration across both short-term participation and established trends, not merely a weak index close.

Pharmaceuticals retain a stronger cohort

Every sector closed lower. Health Care still has the strongest relative-strength score, at 71.8, despite falling 2.5% today. Inside it, Pharmaceuticals has 52% of stocks in Stage 2, with that share up 1.27 percentage points over 20 sessions across a 120-stock group. Hospitals & Diagnostic Centres tells a different story: only 32% are advancing, and that share has lost 9.68 points over the same period. The sector label hides a meaningful split. Pharmaceuticals retains broader trend participation; it was not sheltered from today's selling, with the industry down 2.6%.

Tega Industries Ltd leads the early Stage-2 list with a setup score of 8.8 out of 10, followed by SMS Pharmaceuticals Ltd at 8.3 and Lloyds Engineering Works Ltd at 7.8. These are screening candidates, not evidence of a market turn. The market's median setup score has slipped to 5.1, its lowest reading in the window. Spectrum Electrical Industries Ltd scores 10 among the established trends, but that list describes names that have already run further, not fresh opportunities. Strong individual scores and weak market breadth can coexist; today they plainly do.
