Nifty closed today at its lowest level in the past thirty sessions, down for the second day out of the last three big moves. The screen's regime label has now read neutral-to-down for twenty straight sessions, and today gave no reason to change that. Fifty-two-week lows hit 285 stocks, a fresh high for the window, against just 121 new highs — new lows outnumbering new highs by 164. The Stage-2 share of the universe, the pool this screener hunts in, slipped to 30.3%, its lowest reading of the past month. Median setup score is at its softest too. None of this is a crash signal on its own, but the trend of the last four weeks is unmistakably down, not sideways.
Breadth keeps eroding, not just the index
Only three sectors closed higher today — Health Care, Industrials and Utilities, all up less than half a percent — with Communication Services flat and the other seven red, Real Estate worst at down 1.6%. That is a thin, defensive tilt, not a rotation into strength. Under the hood it is worse: the five-day net flow of stocks moving up the stages into Stage 2 versus sliding down out of it has been negative for twenty-four straight sessions, and today's reading of minus 40 is well into the bottom half of the last month's range. Fewer than 30% of stocks sit above their 20-day average and under 37% are above their 200-day line. This is a tape being sold into, session after session, even on the days Nifty manages a green candle.
Energy is the one sector building, not breaking
Set against that backdrop, Energy stands out. It has the highest share of stocks in Stage 2 of any sector, at 55%, and that share has risen nearly 14 points over the past month — the only sector moving that direction while every other one bleeds Stage-2 names. Energy's month-on-month return is still negative, so this isn't a price story yet, but the internal shift — more names quietly building bases and turning up — is worth tracking rather than chasing. Elsewhere the highest relative-strength sectors remain Health Care and Industrials, both also home to the day's few gainers, while Information Technology sits at the bottom on relative strength with a one-month return down over 9%, the softest of any sector.
What the screen is surfacing today
The early-stage names still worth a look without having missed the move include Sree Rayalaseema Hi-Strength Hypo, Andhra Paper and Wockhardt, all Stage-2 setups that haven't run far from their 50-day average yet. On the other end, names like Spectrum Electrical Industries, Raymond and Kopran carry the highest setup scores in the screen precisely because their trends are the most extended — useful as a read on what's leading, not as fresh entries. In a tape where breadth is still falling and the Stage-2 pool itself is shrinking, treat every new setup with more scepticism than usual; the base rate for follow-through is weaker when the market internals are heading this way.
