The Nifty's one-day fall of 1.2% understates the damage. Just 390 stocks advanced against 2,111 decliners today, an advance-decline ratio of 0.18 - by far the weakest reading of the past 30 sessions, when the ratio touched as high as 1.51 only twelve days ago. This is not a one-index story. It's a breadth wipeout.

Breadth has cratered across every timeframe

Only 24.5% of stocks now sit above their 20-day average, down from 57% barely six weeks back - a fresh window low. The 50-day and 200-day readings tell the same story: 29.5% and 37% respectively, both the weakest of the past month. Stocks at 52-week highs fell to just 56, while those at 52-week lows swelled to 252. Net new highs minus lows is now minus 196, the worst print in the series and a sharp reversal from plus 139 just six weeks ago. Three straight sessions of negative net new highs, and the five-day transition count has been negative for fourteen sessions running - advances into Stage 2 are drying up while slides into Stage 3 keep coming.

Stage-2 share is shrinking, not rotating

The share of stocks in Stage 2 has fallen to 32.5%, its lowest point in the window, down nearly five points in twenty sessions. This isn't sector rotation - it's broad deterioration. Financials, Industrials, Utilities and Real Estate all dropped more than 2% today, with Industrials down 3.4% and Real Estate down 3.5%. Utilities' Stage-2 share has nearly halved over the past month, now just 16%. Energy is the one sector bucking the trend, with Stage-2 share up 27 points in twenty days even as the sector itself fell over 1% today - a case of high-scoring names getting a spot bid inside an otherwise ugly tape. IT staged a small bounce, up 0.83%, but its Stage-2 share has been fading for weeks, not building.

What to do with the setups list today

The screener still throws up names - Orient Bell and Suraksha Diagnostic lead the early-stage list with scores near 9, and Alembic and Quality Power aren't far behind. But remember what this screen is built to do: surface Stage-2 names on any day, good or bad. A read this weak in breadth means even a well-scored setup is swimming against a falling tide. The sustained list - Raymond, Modison, Welspun group names - shows where money already made its money; it's a record of past leadership, not a shopping list. With the advance-decline ratio at a monthly low and lows outnumbering highs by nearly 200 stocks, this is a day for sitting on your hands rather than chasing green setup scores against a red tape.
